President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Government will launch a National Engineers’ Award in 2026 to recognise the contributions of engineers to national development.
The announcement was made during the inaugural National Engineers’ Day, which was celebrated yesterday in the Maldives. The President also declared 30 August as “Maldives Engineers’ Day”, to be observed annually. The date was chosen to coincide with the opening of the Sinamalé Bridge, the country’s largest infrastructure project, which has shaped social and economic life since its completion seven years ago.
In his address, President Muizzu highlighted the role of engineers in realising the Government’s vision of transforming the Maldives into a developed nation by 2040. He noted their importance in advancing digitalisation, achieving renewable energy targets, and supporting major infrastructure projects.
The President added that the Government will continue to expand opportunities for education, training, and academic research in engineering fields, while also formally recognising the achievements of professionals through the new award.
He concluded by reflecting on the innovation of Maldivian ancestors, stating that today’s engineers carry this legacy forward in driving national progress.
