MACL Signs Agreement to Build New Airport in Th. Guraidhoo

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has signed an agreement to develop a new airport in Thaa Atoll Guraidhoo, making it the third airport project in the atoll.

The agreement was signed during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s tour of Thaa Atoll. Finance Minister Moosa Zameer signed on behalf of the government, while MACL’s Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed signed on behalf of the company.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Muizzu said the airport would be completed within 22 months and inaugurated on 26 July 2027 to coincide with Independence Day. He also announced that an agreement for land reclamation in Guraidhoo would be signed today.

Guraidhoo Council President Thaufeeq Ali described the project as a long-awaited dream for residents, stating that the President’s decision had now made it a reality.

Thaa Atoll currently has one operational airport, in Thimarafushi, which opened in 2013 during former President Dr Mohamed Waheed’s administration. Developed by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), the facility features a 1,200-metre runway and was built at a cost of MVR 32 million.

A second airport is already under development in Vilufushi, with reclamation works beginning earlier this week.

During his ongoing tour, President Muizzu also pledged further development projects for islands across Thaa Atoll.
