The Government of the Republic of Maldives and the Government of the People’s Republic of China have signed an Agreement on Development Cooperation, providing an assistance package of RMB 600 million, equivalent to approximately USD 83 million at current exchange rates.
The agreement was signed at a ceremony held this morning by Dr Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, on behalf of the Maldivian government, and by Mr Kong Xianhua, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Maldives, on behalf of the Chinese government.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the agreement is intended to support the Maldives’ key development priorities over the coming years. Assistance under the agreement will focus on several projects, including the development of the China–Maldives Friendship Hospital in Villimalé, the Malé and Villimalé road development project, and the construction of 50 council buildings across the Maldives, among other initiatives.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel said the agreement reflects the close bilateral relationship between the Maldives and China. He referred to past Chinese-supported projects, including housing developments in Hulhumalé, cooperation in the health sector, increased tourism arrivals, and the China–Maldives Friendship Bridge.
The Minister expressed appreciation to President Xi Jinping, the Government of China, and the Chinese people for their continued cooperation, and reaffirmed the Maldives’ intention to continue working with China on development cooperation.
In his remarks, Ambassador Kong Xianhua reiterated China’s support for the Maldives’ development efforts and said China remains committed to strengthening bilateral cooperation through the implementation of mutually agreed projects for the benefit of both countries.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Finance and Planning, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other invited guests attended the signing ceremony.
