Velana International Airport (VIA) has reported a 10 percent increase in cargo handled in 2025 compared to the previous year, reflecting growing trade and transshipment activity.
According to statistics released by the airport, a total of 89,163 tonnes of cargo passed through VIA last year. Of this, 66,840 tonnes were imports, while 23,323 tonnes were exported from the Maldives. The volume of transshipment goods—cargo sent through the Maldives to other countries—was a major driver, reaching 16,372 tonnes, a 22 percent increase from 2024. Most transshipment cargo was transported by air, with 13,180 tonnes moved via aircraft and 3,192 tonnes handled through combined sea-to-air services.
The number of cargo ships operating through VIA has also increased, supporting the rising demand. Major cargo operators serving the airport include Afcom, Fly Vaayu, Mjets, Qatar Cargo, National Airlines, AirMaster, and MNG Airlines. These operators conducted 524 trips last year, transporting a combined total of 4,300 tonnes of cargo.
Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), which manages VIA, said it plans to expand the cargo storage area on the apron to facilitate smoother loading operations. MACL is also introducing additional X-ray machines and automating certain procedures to accelerate cargo clearance and improve operational efficiency.
The airport’s growing cargo capacity highlights the Maldives’ increasing role in regional logistics and underscores the importance of Velana International Airport as a hub for trade, exports, and transshipment services.
