President Cites Japan’s Development Role as Maldives Congratulates Re-Elected Prime Minister

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has highlighted Japan’s longstanding support for the Maldives’ socio-economic development in a congratulatory message to Japan’s re-elected Prime Minister, as the two countries move closer to marking six decades of diplomatic relations.

The President extended congratulations to Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on behalf of the Government and people of the Maldives following her confirmation by Japan’s National Diet. In his message, he noted that her renewed mandate reflects confidence in her leadership and vision for Japan.

Referring to the approaching 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027, the President recalled Japan’s contribution to the Maldives’ development over the years, stating that such support remains deeply appreciated by the Maldivian people. He expressed confidence that the bilateral relationship would continue to translate shared values into practical cooperation benefiting both countries.

Separately, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel conveyed congratulations to Toshimitsu Motegi on his reappointment as Japan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs. In his message, the Minister referred to the enduring friendship between the two countries and reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening bilateral, economic and commercial ties. He also noted a shared interest in regional security and a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Japan were established in 1967. Over the decades, Japan has remained a key development partner to the Maldives, supporting projects across infrastructure, fisheries, disaster resilience and human resource development. With the 60-year milestone approaching, recent exchanges between leaders signal continued engagement at both political and diplomatic levels.
