Maldives Ships 140 Tonnes Through Sea-to-Air Cargo Service in January

The Maldives’ sea-to-air cargo service transported 140 tonnes of goods to six countries in January, equivalent to 26 twenty-foot equivalent units, according to operational data released by Maldives Ports Limited.

Sea-to-air cargo involves receiving shipments by sea and forwarding them by air to international destinations. The model is designed to combine the lower cost of maritime transport with the speed of air freight, offering an alternative routing option for time-sensitive goods.

The service, launched on 15 May 2024, is jointly operated by Maldives Airports Company Limited and Maldives Ports Limited. Since its introduction, it has established connections with more than 17 airlines.

Statistics from Maldives Ports Limited show that cargo in January was transported by carriers including Virgin Atlantic, Etihad Airways, Lufthansa, Swiss Airline and Turkish Airline. The range of participating airlines reflects integration with established international freight networks.

Authorities have stated that the service has generated revenue in the millions of dollars. The Maldives’ existing air connectivity is considered a structural advantage for the continued development of this model, although long-term growth will depend on sustained volumes and competitive positioning within regional transshipment markets.
