Efforts to address cost pressures and operational challenges in the Maldives’ transport sector are beginning to shift towards renewable energy solutions, as studies get underway to assess alternative service models.
The Ministry of Transport stated that transportation remains central to both economic activity and daily life in the country, given the need to move people and goods across dispersed islands. Existing initiatives such as the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) ferry network have eased inter-island travel, while airport development projects continue to expand air connectivity.
At the same time, the sector faces ongoing challenges linked to fuel price volatility and weather conditions, both of which affect reliability and operating costs. These constraints have prompted the government to explore more sustainable approaches.
According to the ministry, studies are now being conducted on the feasibility of introducing transport services powered by eco-friendly and renewable energy sources. The move reflects an attempt to reduce dependence on fuel while addressing cost and resilience concerns within the system.
The ministry also pointed to broader ambitions of creating a more integrated national transport network, with the aim of improving connectivity across the country and lowering travel costs over time.
Infrastructure development projects in the sector are expected to continue as part of these longer-term plans.
