The government has indicated it will maintain an impartial and collaborative approach in working with newly elected local councils and Women’s Development Committees following the recent local elections.
In a statement shared on social media after voting concluded, Adam Shareef Umar congratulated successful candidates and said the ministry would engage with all councils without discrimination. He added that this approach would be applied consistently across all administrative areas.
The statement comes as preliminary results suggest that candidates aligned with the Maldivian Democratic Party secured a majority of council seats, reflecting a shift in local political representation.
Adam Shareef said the ministry expects the incoming councils to play an active role in community development and social inclusion. He also encouraged elected officials to remain closely engaged with residents while carrying out their responsibilities.
He further noted that the transition could contribute to strengthening the decentralised governance framework as the new councils assume office.
