The Maldives has moved to reinforce its regional partnerships through a series of high-level diplomatic engagements, with Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam holding separate discussions with her counterparts in India and Sri Lanka, signalling continued emphasis on bilateral cooperation amid evolving regional dynamics.
In a call with India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr S. Jaishankar, both sides reviewed the trajectory of Maldives-India relations and explored avenues to deepen cooperation. The discussion reflected the longstanding nature of the partnership, with India continuing to be positioned as a key partner for the Maldives, particularly during periods of economic and logistical strain. The recent INR 30 billion currency swap arrangement was highlighted during the exchange as an example of financial support extended to the Maldives, reinforcing the operational importance of the relationship.
The engagement also pointed to the broader role India plays as a first responder in times of need, a factor that continues to shape bilateral ties beyond formal agreements. This dimension of the relationship has remained central to cooperation between the two countries, particularly in areas such as financial stability and emergency assistance.
In a separate call with Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, discussions centred on sustaining and strengthening the longstanding ties between the two countries. Both ministers reviewed ongoing engagements and reiterated their commitment to expanding cooperation across mutually beneficial areas.
The talks with Sri Lanka reflected a more continuity-driven approach, focusing on maintaining stable diplomatic and economic relations while identifying opportunities for further collaboration. Given the geographic proximity and shared regional interests, Maldives-Sri Lanka relations remain an important component of the Maldives’ foreign policy framework.
Taken together, the engagements reflect a dual-track approach to regional diplomacy, balancing strategic partnerships with India alongside steady engagement with neighbouring Sri Lanka. The discussions signal an intent to maintain stability in bilateral relations while ensuring continued access to economic and institutional support where needed.
