Subsidised Fuel for Fishermen Now Available Across 13 Locations

Subsidised fuel for fishermen is now available in 13 locations across the Maldives, as the government moves to limit the pressure of rising global oil prices on the fisheries sector.

Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam said the network now includes nine newly introduced locations. He made the remarks during a press conference held by the Special Cabinet Committee formed by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu in response to escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Minister Shiyam said efforts are being made to ensure fishing vessels across the country can access affordable fuel regardless of location. The government is also working to expand the service to three additional atolls.

The programme comes as rising oil prices, linked to unrest in the Middle East, continue to affect import costs. Minister Shiyam said higher fuel prices affect not only fishermen and their families, but the wider population by adding to overall economic pressure.

He said the government’s aim is to keep fishing activity running despite global fuel price increases, allowing vessels to continue going out to sea. More than 1.1 million litres of fuel have already been supplied to fishermen under the subsidised fuel programme.

Minister Shiyam also noted that fishing activity has improved since 14 April. He said the government is working to ensure that all vessels with fishing licences are able to operate.

The Minister added that fish processors and exporters are facing difficulties, particularly due to high air freight costs. However, exports are continuing despite these challenges.
