Maldivian and MMS Partner to Improve Aviation Weather Services at Maafaru

Island Aviation Services Limited and the Maldives Meteorological Service have signed an agreement to strengthen aviation weather services at Maafaru International Airport, a move expected to improve flight safety and operational reliability in the northern Maldives.

The Memorandum of Understanding and Service Agreement will see the Maldives Meteorological Service establish a new weather observatory at Maafaru International Airport. The facility is intended to improve regional weather data collection and support more accurate aviation meteorological services for aircraft operating through the airport.

Under the agreement, the Maldives Meteorological Service will provide weather observations, forecasts, warnings and advisory support for aviation operations. These services are considered central to safe flight planning, air traffic control and airport management, particularly in an island geography where weather conditions can shift quickly across regions.

The agreement was signed at the Island Aviation head office by Ibrahim Iyas, Managing Director of Island Aviation Services Limited, and Abdulla Wahid, Director General of the Maldives Meteorological Service. Senior officials from both organisations attended the signing ceremony.

“This partnership represents a major milestone in strengthening aviation safety standards and operational reliability at Maafaru International Airport,” said Iyas. “Accurate and timely weather information is critical for pilots, air traffic controllers, and airport operations, and this agreement ensures we continue to meet international best practices.”

Wahid said the dedicated aviation weather services would improve both safety and efficiency in airport operations, while supporting the continued growth of the aviation and tourism sectors in the Maldives.

Maafaru International Airport has become an important aviation gateway in the northern Maldives, serving both domestic and international air traffic. Improved weather services at the airport are expected to support its role in regional connectivity, particularly for tourism-linked travel and private aviation.

The initiative also aligns with international aviation standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization and reflects wider efforts to improve the reliability of aviation infrastructure across the country.

Island Aviation Services Limited, which operates the national airline Maldivian, said the agreement forms part of continued collaboration with the Maldives Meteorological Service to improve service reliability and support safe air transport.
