The death of a Spanish tourist near Gaafu Dhaalu Vaadhoo has added to wider concerns over water safety in the Maldives, as search efforts continue for Italian divers reported missing in Vaavu Atoll.
Police said they received a report at around 12:57 pm today that a tourist was drowning after entering the sea from a safari boat to surf near Vaadhoo. The victim was identified as a 53-year-old man from Spain.
According to police, the man had already died by the time he was taken to the Vaadhoo Health Centre. Police said further inquiries into the incident are ongoing.
The drowning comes as the Maldives continues to deal with a separate diving tragedy in Vaavu Atoll, where several Italian tourists were reported missing. So far, one body has been recovered during the search operation, while others remain unaccounted for.
The incidents have placed renewed attention on safety practices across water-based tourism activities in the Maldives. Diving, surfing, snorkelling, swimming and other marine activities are central to the country’s tourism industry, but they also carry risks that require clear procedures, trained personnel, weather awareness, proper equipment checks and reliable emergency response systems.
The Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI), responding to the Vaavu Atoll incident, urged tourism service providers, including dive centres and dive operators, to ensure that safety standards are maintained at the highest level to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
While the circumstances of the Vaadhoo drowning and the Vaavu Atoll diving incident differ, both cases point to the importance of safety oversight across resorts, guesthouses, safari vessels, dive centres and other tourism operators. For a destination built around the ocean, the strength of safety systems is not only a regulatory issue but also central to visitor confidence.
The police investigation into the Vaadhoo incident is ongoing.
