Japan and the Maldives have begun efforts to strengthen defence cooperation, with Japanese State Minister of Defence Masahisa Miyazaki stating that both countries are working to elevate their defence relationship to a new level.
The remarks followed a courtesy call by the Maldives’ Ambassador to Japan, Ahmed Mahloof, during which the two sides discussed ways to enhance cooperation in the defence sector.
In a social media post after the meeting, Miyazaki said he appreciated the Maldives’ cooperation in supporting contingency arrangements involving Japanese military aircraft. He added that Japan and the Maldives would continue to strengthen defence ties in a manner that benefits both countries, describing the current efforts as the beginning of a broader partnership.
Ambassador Mahloof also described the discussions as productive, noting that the meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations and exchanging views on future cooperation in the defence sector.
He said Japan remains an important partner for the Maldives, highlighting Tokyo’s longstanding support in areas including maritime security and safety, emergency preparedness and disaster management.
Mahloof expressed confidence that cooperation, trust and friendship between the two countries would continue to deepen as they approach the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Maldives and Japan will commemorate six decades of diplomatic relations in 2027.
The Maldives and Japan have maintained close bilateral ties over the years, with cooperation spanning infrastructure development, disaster risk management, maritime security and capacity-building initiatives. Recent discussions indicate both countries are seeking to broaden engagement in defence and security-related areas as part of their wider partnership.
