Vice President to Address Climate Mobility Forum in Berlin

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef departed for Berlin on Tuesday evening to participate in the Berlin Climate Mobility Forum 2026, where he will serve as a keynote speaker.

The forum, scheduled for 18 and 19 June, will provide the Maldives with an opportunity to highlight the rights and protection needs of communities vulnerable to climate change, particularly those facing displacement and threats from sea-level rise.

Vice President Latheef is scheduled to deliver an opening statement during the High-Level Segment on the Climate Mobility Principles. He will also participate in a high-level panel discussion on protecting rights in the face of sea-level rise.

The forum will bring together heads of state, senior government officials, representatives from communities most affected by climate change and young innovators developing local responses.

Discussions are expected to focus on climate-induced mobility and adaptation strategies for communities facing displacement, migration pressures and the potential loss of habitable land.

The meeting will also mark the formal adoption of the Global Climate Mobility Principles, an international agreement intended to guide responses to climate-related movement.

The principles place emphasis on supporting adaptation measures that allow people to remain in their communities where possible. They also call for relocation processes to protect dignity and rights when moving communities becomes unavoidable.

Participants are expected to consider a roadmap for translating the principles into practical partnerships and coordinated international action.

The discussions carry particular relevance for the Maldives, where sea-level rise poses long-term risks to island communities, infrastructure and habitability.
