Maldives, Japan Discuss Expanding Fisheries and Agriculture Cooperation

The Maldives and Japan have held discussions aimed at deepening cooperation in the fisheries and agriculture sectors as the two countries prepare to mark 60 years of diplomatic relations next year.

The talks took place during a courtesy meeting between Maldivian Ambassador to Japan Ahmed Mahloof and Japan’s Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Norikazu Suzuki. According to the ambassador, the meeting focused on opportunities to strengthen collaboration in areas that have long formed part of the bilateral relationship.

Japan has been a key partner in the development of the Maldives’ fisheries industry for decades, providing technical expertise, capacity building programmes and other forms of support that have contributed to the sector’s growth.

Ambassador Mahloof noted that Japanese fisheries experts had been working with the Maldives even before formal diplomatic ties were established, reflecting the longstanding nature of cooperation between the two countries.

During the meeting, both sides discussed ways to further expand engagement in fisheries and agriculture, with attention also given to the upcoming 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Japan.

The discussions come as the Maldives continues to work with international partners to strengthen key economic sectors and enhance technical collaboration in support of long-term development.
