Local SMEs to Benefit as Financial Expo Supports Small Businesses

Small and medium-sized enterprises will be among the notable beneficiaries of the Maldives Financial Expo 2026, both as vendors and as the subject of dedicated financial showcases during the three-day event at Hulhumalé Central Park.

The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), which is organising the expo from 2 to 4 July, has ensured that food and beverage stalls throughout the venue will be operated exclusively by local SMEs. With the event expected to draw significant public attendance across three evenings — the 2017 edition attracted over 6,000 visitors — the commercial opportunity for small businesses is substantial.

Beyond the vendor programme, financial institutions participating in the expo are expected to highlight financing products and services specifically designed for SMEs. Entrepreneurs and small business owners will have direct access to bank representatives, allowing them to explore loan products, business accounts, credit facilities and other solutions in a single location without formal appointment processes.

SME finance is also formally recognised in the inaugural Maldives Financial Sector Awards, which takes place on 1 July — the day before the expo opens. A dedicated Excellence in SME Finance category will recognise financial institutions that have demonstrated outstanding performance in supporting small business growth, signalling that the MMA views SME lending not merely as a commercial product but as a measurable indicator of a healthy and inclusive financial sector.

For a small island economy like the Maldives, SMEs form the backbone of local economic activity. Improving their access to formal financial services — credit, insurance, digital payment infrastructure — directly supports broader economic resilience and diversification.

The expo’s SME focus reflects the third pillar of its theme, “Empowering Sustainable Futures: Inclusion, Innovation, and Intelligence”: inclusion. Meaningful financial inclusion, organisersargue, cannot be achieved without specifically addressing the barriers that prevent small businesses from accessing the services available to larger enterprises.

The Maldives Financial Expo 2026 is open to the public from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily from 2 to 4 July.
