Applicants must contact their preferred universities to obtain an admission letter or a document indicating an intention to admit them. At least one such document, which may include a pre-admission letter or an acceptance certificate from a prospective supervisor, must accompany the scholarship application.

Those applying for undergraduate degrees must also complete the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) before submitting their applications and provide a valid score report. Students planning to begin their studies in September 2027 must register for an assessment scheduled for November or December 2026, or January 2027.

The CSCA requirement was introduced for the 2026/2027 academic year. Required test subjects depend on the intended field of study, and applicants should consult their preferred universities before registering.

For Chinese-taught master’s and doctoral programmes, applicants must demonstrate proficiency equivalent to Level 4 of the Chinese Proficiency Test, known as HSK. The announcement specifies HSK Level 3 for general and senior scholar programmes and advises applicants to check their chosen university’s language requirements.

Applicants studying Chinese under the general scholar programme are exempt from the stated Chinese-language proficiency requirements. Those who previously obtained a degree from a Chinese university through a programme taught in Chinese are also exempt from providing the relevant language proficiency certificate.

The Embassy’s announcement includes attachments setting out the eligibility criteria, required documents and instructions for completing the online application.
