BML Says Subscription Payments Unaffected by Foreign Spend Limits, Urges Customer Contact for Issues

Bank of Maldives (BML) has said it is addressing declined subscription payments and has urged customers experiencing failed transactions to contact the bank directly for immediate assistance and resolution.

The bank clarified on Friday that while limits have been introduced on payments to certain foreign e-commerce platforms using BML Rufiyaa cards, subscription payments for commonly used services are not included within these restrictions.

BML has capped monthly transactions at 30 per person for selected foreign e-commerce sites and introduced an overall daily national limit, measures introduced in response to ongoing foreign exchange constraints. The restrictions have led to customer complaints over difficulties in paying for digital subscriptions.

In a statement posted on ‘X’ on Friday, the bank said subscription payments are not part of the “daily foreign spend” cap and have not been blocked. However, it noted that some merchants have declined subscription transactions for individual users due to various reasons.

BML said it is actively working to resolve such cases and encouraged affected customers to contact the bank directly for support, stating that solutions will be provided promptly.

The bank has also responded to rising customer concerns on social media, with users reporting notifications of declined subscription payments through mobile banking applications. BML has reiterated that such cases are being reviewed individually.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said earlier this week that BML has indicated it expects to introduce significant relief measures to its foreign transaction limits by the end of the month.
