A major infrastructure development agreement has been signed between Maldives and China Machinery Engineering Construction (CMEC). The focus of the project is Hulhumale Phase 3, where CMEC will oversee the establishment of essential utilities.
The agreement will see CMEC complete the electricity network for the area. Additionally, a Gigabit Passive Optic Network (GIPON) will be installed, enhancing internet and telephone connectivity for homes. Road development is also part of the plan, with roads being built with fireproof materials. Improvements to the water and sewerage systems are also on the agenda.
CMEC’s role in the Maldives continues to expand. The company has also been awarded the contract for developing municipal services in Rasmale – the largest housing project of the current administration – and Gulhifalhu.
This contract award follows the recent visit of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to China earlier this year, highlighting the strengthening ties between the two nations.
