Domestic airport on the island of Kudahuvadho in Dhaalu Atoll, “Dhaalu Airport” was officially inaugurated by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom during a special ceremony held in Kudahuvadhoo on 1st November.
Addressing the ceremony, President Yameen stated that with the opening of the airport, Dhaalu Atoll area will experience growth in development such as improvement in the tourism industry of the area and job opportunities. He also highlighted that other development projects will be carried out in the area in future.
Dhaalu Airport is now the most spacious domestic airport in Maldives, with a capacity to accommodate 42 aircrafts simultaneously, including Dash-8 and ATR-72. Around US$ 20 million was spent to construct this airport and approximately 62 Hectares of land was reclaimed from the islands harbour area for this project.
The 1800-meter runway airport was made with a jet parking space. With the addition of this airport, there will be a total of 12 airports across different areas of Maldives. The other airports in operation are Velana International Airport, Gan International Airport, Maamigili International Airport, Hanimaadhoo International Airport and domestic airports in Fuvahmulah, Baa atoll Dharavandhoo island, Raa atoll Ifuru island, Gaafu Alif atoll Kooddoo island, Gaafu Dhaal atoll Kaadehdhoo island, Laamu atoll Kahdhoo island and Thaa atoll Thimarafushi island.
