More than 420 swimmers took part in the Dhiraagu Malé Open 2026, marking the largest open-water swimming competition held in Malé.
Organised by Swim Maldives and held at Rasfannu from 21 to 22 August, the two-day event featured 1km, 500m and 250m races. Participants ranged from six to 79 years old.
This year’s competition also introduced a 500m team relay, allowing friends, families and swimming clubs to compete together.
Swimmers from Special Olympics Maldives and para swimmers joined the races across various distances, competing in the same categories as other participants. The event brought together swimmers of differing ages, abilities and experience levels.
The turnout reflects growing interest in open-water swimming in the Maldives, where the event also aims to encourage awareness of marine-environment protection.
Dhiraagu supported the event as part of its wider focus on healthy lifestyles, community participation and access to recreational activities.
