Dhiraagu has partnered with SEAD to support ocean literacy among young people through educational and practical activities in Hulhumalé, K. Kaashidhoo and B. Goidhoo.
As part of the partnership, Dhiraagu will provide connectivity support to SEAD’s Urban Hub in Hulhumalé and its outreach activities in the islands. The two organisations will also work together to raise environmental awareness and increase understanding of the importance of protecting marine ecosystems.
SEAD is a non-governmental organisation guided by the principles of Science, Explore, Act and Discover. Its programmes combine environmental education with citizen science, marine data collection, field expeditions, ecosystem restoration and hands-on water-based activities.
The youth programme includes learning sessions delivered with the involvement of local experts and marine biologists. Participants explore marine ecosystems, seagrass, wetlands, freshwater ecosystems, sustainable practices and ecosystem restoration.
Activities such as snorkelling, surfing and kitesurfing are also included, allowing participants to engage directly with the marine environment while applying the knowledge covered during the sessions.
The programme aims to help young people develop a better understanding of the ocean and the role individuals and communities can play in protecting it.
The partnership forms part of Dhiraagu’s wider environmental sustainability and youth development efforts, alongside its existing activities in marine conservation, environmental awareness and community engagement.
