The government of the Maldives has taken a significant step towards promoting inclusivity and supporting individuals with disabilities by raising the disability allowance to USD 195. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih approved the revision of the allowance framework after considering a proposal presented by the Ministry of Gender, Family, and Social Services. This marks the first revision of the disability allowance since its inception 12 years ago.
Previously, individuals with disabilities in the Maldives received a monthly allowance of USD 129. However, recognizing the importance of adequately supporting and providing for people with special needs, the government has decided to increase the allowance to USD 195. This adjustment aims to better meet the financial needs of individuals with disabilities and enhance their overall well-being.
The decision to raise the disability allowance comes as a response to the growing number of individuals with disabilities in the Maldives. Currently, there are over 36,000 people living with disabilities in the country. When the disability allowance was initially introduced, only 3,560 individuals benefited from it. However, as the number of people with disabilities has increased over the years, the government has recognized the need to revisit and update the allowance framework.
In addition to increasing the disability allowance, the government of the Maldives has also introduced additional allowances based on the recommendations of the cabinet. These additional allowances will provide further support to individuals with disabilities, ensuring their unique needs are met. By addressing the evolving requirements of persons with special needs, the government aims to promote their overall well-being and inclusivity within society.
In the current year alone, a total of 11,371 beneficiaries have received a combined amount of USD7.1 million in disability allowance. These figures indicate the growing demand for support and financial assistance among individuals with disabilities in the country. By increasing the disability allowance, the government hopes to alleviate some of the financial burdens faced by these individuals and provide them with a more secure and stable livelihood.
