Fenaka Signs Agreement to Transfer Southern City Water Services to MWSC

Water and sewerage services in Addu City and Fuvahmulah City are set to move from Fenaka Corporation to Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) as the Government begins restructuring Fenaka’s utility operations.
The two companies signed a framework agreement on Sunday to carry out the transfer. MWSC Managing Director Hussain Fahumy signed on behalf of MWSC, while Fenaka Managing Director Mohamed Afeef Hassan signed for Fenaka.
Fahumy said MWSC expects to begin providing services in both cities by 13 October. Before the handover, teams from the two companies will inspect facilities, conduct surveys and complete other work needed for the transition.
The transfer forms part of the Government’s plan to dissolve Fenaka and divide its services between two utility providers. Electricity operations are to move to State Electric Company (STELCO), while water and sewerage services are to be transferred to MWSC. The Government says the restructuring is intended to reduce expenditure and improve the management of state-owned companies.
The change will also bring a new operator to cities where residents have raised concerns about utility services. Addu City has experienced repeated water supply interruptions. In Fuvahmulah, water disruptions and contamination concerns last November led Fenaka to waive residents’ water bills for that month.
The agreement starts the handover process, with the condition of existing facilities and the work required to maintain services now among the immediate matters for the two companies to assess.
