First half of 2016 sees a slump in occupancy of resorts while guesthouses on rise

According to statistics published by Ministry of Tourism, first of 2016 ended with a total of 619,921 tourists arrivals to Maldives compared to 609,105 tourists same period last year. The overall resort occupancy fell by 2.3% while the guesthouses recorded an increase of 7.9%. Bednights decreased by 0.8% for resorts while guesthouses recorded an increase of 14.6% in bednights.

The month of June ended with a total of 79,034 tourists arrivals to Maldives compared to 81,506 tourists same period last year. Statistics further indicated unfavorable movements in the occupancy rate of resort islands. The overall resort occupancy fell by 4.8% while the guesthouses recorded an increase of 4.9%. Bednights decreased in June by 4.4% for resorts.

Occupancy rate of guesthouses increased by 3.9% while the guesthouses recorded an increase of 24.4% in bednights. Currently over 354 guesthouses (5245 beds), 117 resorts (25,425 beds), 17 hotels (1741 beds), 141 safari vessels (2581 beds) are registered with the Ministry of Tourism.
