Fisheries Ministry Partners with China for Aquaculture Training

The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, in collaboration with China’s Fujian Fisheries Research Institute, has launched an extensive training programme focused on sea cucumber aquaculture, algae cultivation, fish farming, and the conservation of marine resources. The initiative aims to strengthen sustainable fisheries management and address concerns over declining sea cucumber and grouper populations in Maldivian waters.

The programme was initiated at the request of the Maldivian fisheries ministry, with a specific focus on sea cucumber aquaculture. Participants will receive training on the preparation and management of food for sea cucumbers, alongside broader guidance on marine conservation techniques.

To facilitate the training, six experts from the Fujian Fisheries Research Institute have travelled to the Maldives. Over a seven-day period, these specialists will conduct sessions for 20 officials from the fisheries ministry at Maniyafushi, Kaafu Atoll.

This marks the first joint initiative between the Maldives’ fisheries ministry and a Chinese institution in the field of aquaculture training. The collaboration is expected to enhance local expertise and contribute to the long-term sustainability of the country’s fisheries sector.
