The Maldives is seeking continued World Bank cooperation on renewable energy, digitalisation and healthcare as the Government works to reduce expenditure while pursuing its long-term development priorities.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu discussed these areas during a meeting with World Bank Regional Vice President for South Asia Johannes Zutt at Mulee’aage.
Renewable energy formed a central part of the discussions, with both sides considering its potential to reduce the Maldives’ dependence on imported fossil fuels and limit spending on fuel imports. The meeting also addressed the need for energy solutions that are affordable, reliable and sustainable.
The President outlined the Government’s digitalisation plans and discussed opportunities for continued World Bank assistance in the health sector. He also emphasised that development initiatives must remain financially sustainable and responsive to the country’s long-term requirements.
The role of the private sector in supporting ongoing and future development projects was also discussed, as the Government seeks greater private participation alongside public investment.
Zutt indicated that the World Bank was prepared to assist the Maldives in areas where it could provide support. He also noted that expanding renewable energy could help reduce the country’s exposure to imported fuel costs and related external vulnerabilities.
