Former Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj passed away

Former Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj passed away late Tuesday.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and other Government officials has conveyed condolences to the Indian Government and its people on the demise of the key architect of Maldives-India friendship, H.E. Sushma Sawraj.

Ms. Sushma passed away while undergoing treatment after suffering from cardiac arrest.

She served as the Prime Minister during the first five years of Narendra Modi’s first term and was filling the Ministerial post until May this year.

She visited Maldives on two occasions and worked to expand the diplomatic relationship between Maldives and India.

On behalf of the Government and people of Maldives, the Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed that the country is deeply grieved to hear the loss of Ms. Sushma and that the Maldives has lost a friend and partner with her demise.

He also tweeted that Ms. Sushma who was a stateswoman extraordinaire was a stalwart and inspirational diplomat. And that her legacy of contribution to the Maldives-India relationship will endure.
