Tourism Minister Dr Abdulla Mausoom has stated that the government is currently working to expand the jurisdiction of resorts.
Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) had expressed concern over fishing vessels operating too close to the resorts that could undermine the safety and privacy of tourists. Noting that the jurisdiction of resorts was initially 1,000m before being decreased to the current 500m by the previous government, MATI has requested the tourism ministry to expand the jurisdiction of resorts from 500m to 1,000m.
According to Minister Mausoom, the government has approved MATI’s request and is currently holding discussions to put the amendment into effect. Minister also added that maps illustrating the jurisdiction of the resorts will be created as well.
As per the latest statistics published by the tourism ministry, there are currently 165 resorts operating across the Maldives.
