The government has completed the evaluation of proposals from three local councils seeking to acquire uninhabited islands for economic activities. Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works Adam Shareef announced that the evaluations have been finalised and the reports will be submitted to the President’s Office in the coming week.
Two island councils and one atoll council submitted proposals under President Mohamed Muizzu’s initiative to empower councils by leasing uninhabited islands for income-generating activities. Final decisions on the proposals will be made by the president.
Earlier this year, President Muizzu pledged to simplify the process for councils to obtain permits for economic ventures. The administration’s goal is to promote self-reliance and self-sufficiency among islands and their communities.
Under this policy, uninhabited islands will be leased to councils for periods ranging from 10 to 25 years, providing opportunities to develop local businesses and enhance economic activity across the Maldives.
This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to decentralise economic power and strengthen the role of local councils in driving community development. The decision on the current proposals is expected to set a precedent for future council-led projects.
