The government has selected five islands for the implementation of vertical farming projects as part of its efforts to modernise agriculture and reduce reliance on imports. Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Aishath Rameela announced the decision during an interview with state media, highlighting the initiative as a key step toward advancing local farming practices.
The islands selected for vertical farming are Kendhikulhudhoo in Noonu Atoll, Hulhudhuffaaru in Raa Atoll, Naifaru in Lhaviyani Atoll, Mathiveri in Alifu Alifu Atoll, and Kinbidhoo in Thaa Atoll. Local councils on these islands have already been informed of the decision.
According to the minister, the procurement of structures for vertical farming is currently underway, with the equipment expected to arrive in early 2025. Once received, the government will launch training programmes to equip local farmers with the skills and knowledge needed for vertical farming, alongside additional technical support.
Minister Rameela noted the growing popularity of modern farming techniques such as hydroponics and greenhouse farming, which have been embraced by many local farmers for their ability to reduce the risk of plant diseases. The government is committed to supporting these methods to enhance agricultural output and decrease dependency on imported produce.
This initiative is expected to not only improve food security but also create new opportunities for local communities by fostering sustainable and innovative farming practices.
