The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy is set to open applications on Monday for the ‘Magey Solar Programme,’ an initiative designed to bring solar energy to Maldivian households. The programme aims to lower electricity costs and advance sustainable energy practices across the country. Applications will be accepted online through the Fenaka Corporation’s website, with eligibility prioritised by the order in which submissions are received.
The Magey Solar Programme follows previous efforts that saw 748 households successfully equipped with solar power systems. This phase has been carefully planned, with system allocations published in the Gazette, outlining specific details for each atoll. Eligible applicants will have the option to install solar photovoltaic (PV) systems based on net metering survey data, with choices of 3 kW and 5 kW capacities.
Notably, no advance payment is required for installation. However, applicants will be required to pay a fee upon signing their contract. The 3 kW system is priced at USD 2,929, while the 5 kW system costs USD 4,883.
The Maldives government has set an ambitious goal of sourcing 33 per cent of the nation’s energy from renewable resources. As a flagship initiative, the Magey Solar Programme is pivotal in helping to achieve this target, promoting cleaner energy sources while providing financial benefits to households across the archipelago.
