The government plans to expand access to international digital platforms following the introduction of PayPal services in the Maldives, as part of efforts to create new income opportunities for young people, entrepreneurs and businesses.
Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed said further widely used platforms are expected to be introduced as the government works to modernise the economy and reduce its dependence on tourism.
He made the remarks during an information session on PayPal services, which became available in the Maldives on 15 June through a partnership between the government and Ooredoo Maldives. The service is accessible through Ooredoo’s m-Faisaa platform.
Ooredoo received regulatory approval in 2025 to provide inward remittance services, forming the basis for Maldivian users to receive international payments through the arrangement.
Minister Saeed said digitalisation and the development of a digital economy remain central to the government’s economic strategy. The administration aims to increase the digital economy’s contribution to gross domestic product to 15 per cent by 2030.
He also said interest and confidence among major international technology companies in the Maldivian market have increased, creating scope for further services to be introduced.
PayPal’s availability is expected to improve access to cross-border payments for freelancers, online service providers, entrepreneurs and businesses. Users will be able to receive payments from international customers and participate more directly in global digital commerce.
The government views the expansion of digital services as part of a broader effort to diversify economic activity and develop income sources beyond the tourism sector.
