Govt Signs EUR 18.4 Million Loan Agreement with EIB for “COVID-19 Health Facility Project”

The government of Maldives has on Wednesday signed a concessional loan agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB) to amass funds for the “Maldives COVID-19 Health Facility Project”. The financing contract is valued at EUR 18.4 million.

According to the press brief released by the Ministry of Finance, this loan has been issued under the “South Asia Public Healthcare COVID-19 Program Loan” introduced by EIB in 2021.

The loan agreement was signed on behalf of the Maldivian government by Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer. It was signed on behalf of EIB by the bank’s Global Partners Director Ms. Maria Shaw-Barragan. The agreement was signed during the “European Development Days 2022” event held at Brussels, Belgium.

The loan will help establish a National Health Laboratory and isolation facilities in the atolls, thereby increasing the island nation’s resilience to pandemics, improve the health sector and support sustainable development.
