Gov’t to Establish Dedicated Body for Aviation Safety Oversight

The Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Ameen, has announced the government’s plans to create a specialised entity focused on aviation safety investigations. Speaking on state media, the minister emphasised the importance of enhancing aviation safety protocols in preparation for an International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) safety audit scheduled for June 2025.

Minister Ameen revealed that the new authority would oversee aviation safety investigations, separating this responsibility from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). “The most important step is to transfer aircraft accident investigation out of the mandate of the Civil Aviation [Authority] and establish a dedicated body for this purpose,” he said, adding that this approach aligns with international practices and ICAO requirements.

The proposal to establish the authority is expected to be presented to the cabinet by the end of January, with plans to formalise its creation through a presidential decree. The initiative forms part of a broader strategy aimed at aligning the Maldives’ aviation sector with ICAO standards and improving the country’s performance in the upcoming safety audit.

In preparation for this audit, the government has already revised the mandate of the CAA to meet international standards. Legislative amendments to further strengthen the air transportation sector have also been submitted to the Attorney General for review, underscoring the ministry’s commitment to bolstering aviation safety and infrastructure.

Minister Ameen highlighted President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s dedication to enhancing the aviation industry, noting ongoing initiatives to ensure collaboration between the CAA and other stakeholders. These efforts aim to strengthen the Maldives’ aviation framework and ensure compliance with global standards.

Currently, the Maldives operates 19 airports nationwide and boasts the world’s largest seaplane fleet, a testament to the country’s growing aviation sector. With additional facilities under development, the establishment of a dedicated aviation safety investigation authority is expected to further solidify the Maldives’ position as a key player in the global aviation landscape.
