Gov’t to Pursue Tourism Leaseholders Over Unpaid Rent and Fines

Key points
  • The Government will pursue tourism leaseholders with unpaid rent, fines, and penalties under the Tourism Act.
  • Enforcement covers both active properties and those that ceased operations without prior Ministry approval.
  • Affected leaseholders are instructed to immediately settle all outstanding amounts per their lease agreements.

Tourism leaseholders with outstanding rent, fines and penalty payments face enforcement action under a new Government directive covering properties in operation as well as those that have stopped operating without approval.

The action is being taken under the Tourism Act of the Maldives and associated regulations. It applies to leaseholders of tourism properties that are actively operating, as well as properties where operations have ceased or been suspended without prior authorisation from the Ministry.

The Government has instructed affected leaseholders to immediately clear all unpaid amounts owed to the State. Payments must be settled in line with the terms and conditions set out in their respective lease agreements.

The notice covers accumulated rent, fines and penalties payable under tourism property leases.

The measure signals closer enforcement of lease obligations across the tourism sector, particularly for operators whose properties are no longer active but have not received formal approval to suspend or cease operations.
