President Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Hassan Zareer as Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises.
The letter of appointment was presented to Zareer during a ceremony held at the President’s Office on Monday afternoon.
Following the appointment, the oath of office was administered by Mohamed Saleem, after which Zareer signed the official declaration of oath.
Zareer most recently served as Commissioner General of Taxation at the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), a position he was appointed to last year.
According to his profile displayed on the Chartered Accountants of the Maldives, he previously served as Chief Public Accounts Executive at the Public Accounts office and headed the Public Enterprises Monitoring and Evaluation Board at the Ministry of Finance and Treasury.
He has also served on the boards of several state-owned enterprises and listed companies, including Maldives Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), State Electric Company (STELCO), Maldives Post Limited (MPL) and Maldives National Oil Company.
Zareer holds a Bachelor of Accounting and a Master of Science in Finance from International Islamic University Malaysia. He is also a Fellow Chartered Management Accountant (FCMA, CGMA) in the United Kingdom and a Certified Practising Accountant in Australia.
The appointment comes hours after the resignation of former Finance and Public Enterprises Minister Moosa Zameer on earlier in the morning.
Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef confirmed Zameer’s resignation earlier on Sunday but did not provide a reason for his departure, stating that further clarification should be sought from the former minister.
No additional details have been released regarding the circumstances surrounding Zameer’s resignation.
Zameer had assumed the finance portfolio following a cabinet reshuffle in April and previously served as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
