Hassan Zareer Approved as Commissioner General of Taxation

On Tuesday, the Parliament’s Committee on Economic Affairs granted approval for the appointment of former Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation, Hassan Zareer, to the position of Commissioner General of Taxation.

The vacancy arose following the resignation of the previous commissioner, Fathuhulla Jameel, who stepped down from his role to participate in the recent parliamentary election.

Among the applicants for the position, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu put forth two nominations: former Commissioner General of Taxation, Yazeed Mohamed, and former Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation, Hassan Zareer.

Following thorough interviews with both nominees, the Committee on Economic Affairs convened to deliberate on the two candidates earlier today.

Yazeed Mohamed garnered 4 votes in favour, while Hassan Zareer secured approval with a notable 10 votes.

Alongside his parliamentary approval for the role of Tax Commissioner, Hassan Zareer has concurrently been appointed as the Chairperson of the Director’s Board of Bank of Maldives.

The Commissioner General of Taxation bears the responsibility of overseeing the nation’s tax administration, ensuring compliance with tax laws, and facilitating efficient revenue collection processes.
