Island Aviation Services Limited (IASL) and the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) have formalised an agreement to significantly expand the apron at Maafaru International Airport, a project set to enhance the airport’s infrastructure and capacity. The agreement was signed by IASL’s Managing Director, Mr Ibrahim Iyas, and MTCC’s CEO and Managing Director, Mr Abdulla Ziyad, marking a key step in the continued development of the Maldives as a leading global aviation hub.
The expansion will see the paving of an additional 15,300 square metres, effectively doubling the airport’s current aircraft parking capacity. Presently, Maafaru International Airport can accommodate 13 business jets simultaneously. However, once the project is completed, this capacity will increase to 26 business jets, addressing the growing demand for parking space, particularly during peak travel seasons.
“This expansion is a critical milestone for Maafaru International Airport. By doubling our aircraft parking capacity, we are not only meeting the growing needs of business jet operators but also positioning Maafaru as a key gateway in the region, capable of delivering exceptional services for our customers and enhancing operational efficiency,” said Mr Ibrahim Iyas, Managing Director of IASL.
The project is scheduled for completion within six months, ensuring that Maafaru International Airport is well-prepared to meet future demands in the aviation industry. The increased capacity is expected to enable the airport to offer more efficient and seamless services, further solidifying its status as a preferred destination for high-end travellers and business jet operators.
Mr Abdulla Ziyad, CEO and Managing Director of MTCC, expressed his confidence in the project’s success, stating, “Our collaboration with IASL marks a significant chapter in the development of Maafaru International Airport. We are proud to contribute our expertise to a project that will have a lasting impact on the region’s connectivity and economic growth.”
The expansion of Maafaru International Airport’s apron is poised to play a vital role in enhancing the Maldives’ connectivity and supporting its growing reputation as a premier destination for luxury travel and business aviation.
