Japan Commits Grant of MVR 1.17 Million to Upgrade GA. Nilandhoo School

The Government of Japan has committed a grant of JPY 8,173,332, (approximately USD 75,679 equivalent to MVR 1,166,970) for ‘‘The Project for Upgrading of  Nilandhoo School in Nilandhoo Island, Gaafu Alifu Atoll” under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme. 

The Grant Contract was signed by Her Excellency Ms. Yanai Keiko, Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, and Ms. Khadeeja Ibrahim, Principal of Nilandhoo School in Gaafu Alifu Atoll at a ceremony held today at the Ministry of Education.

The Project will be implemented by Nilandhoo School with the support of the Ministry of  Education. Under the terms of the Grant Contact, the project funds for the construction of a library and a classroom for Grade 1 students in Nilandhoo School. This assistance will enable quality education for  children in an appropriate learning environment. The facility will also be utilized as an emergency evacuation shelter for residents in case of natural disasters in the island. 

The GGP is part of the Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) implemented by the Embassy of Japan in Maldives in order to empower people at the grassroots level. Since 1996, the GGP has been implemented in broad areas such as education, environment, health, transportation and energy  with a view to contributing to sustainable development of the Maldives.
