The Government of Japan has committed a grant of USD 40,569 for the provision of an emergency support vehicle and dewatering equipment to Maldivian Red Crescent (MRC) in Kulhudhuffushi City, Haa Dhaalu Atoll. This is being carried out under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme.
The grant contract was signed by Her Excellency Mrs TAKEUCHI Midori, Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, and Ms Fathimath Himya, Secretary General of the MRC.
Under the terms of the grant contract, the project funds for the procurement of a vehicle — a brand new Toyota Hilux 4WD Double — to support emergency response operations of the MRC, Kulhudhuffushi City Unit, especially to be used during disasters such as various forms of flooding, other emergencies and accidents, to curb the issue of delays for the deployment timings. In addition to this vehicle, dewatering equipment such as water pump and hoses will also be procured under this grant.
The GGP is part of the Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) implemented by the Embassy of Japan in Maldives in order to empower people at the grassroots level. Since 1996, the GGP has been implemented in broad areas such as education, environment, health, transportation and energy with a view to contributing to the sustainable development of the Maldives.
