MACL Announces Board Revamp with Industry Veterans in Key Roles

The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has recently refreshed its Board of Directors, assembling a team of experienced professionals from a variety of fields. As a fully government-owned limited liability company, MACL operates under the guidance of a Board of Directors appointed by the President of the Maldives.

The newly composed board, responsible for guiding MACL’s governance and strategic planning, is comprised of experts with substantial expertise in areas such as tourism, finance, aviation, and law.

Leading the board is Mohamed Umar Manik, who was appointed to the MACL Board in June 2013. Manik is a stalwart in the tourism industry, having commenced his career in 1972 as one of the pioneers in the Maldives tourism sector. His outstanding contributions have been recognised with prestigious awards, including the Nishaan Muleege Sharafuge Izzaiytheri Veriyaa from the Government of Maldives. With an impressive track record, Manik has also served as the Chairman of the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) for an exceptional 25 years.

Joining the board in November 2023, Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed brings 36 years of public service experience to his role as the Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director / Executive Director. A distinguished alumnus of Deakin University, Australia, Shareef’s leadership extends across various state-level roles, including Commissioner General of Customs and Chairman of several prominent organisations. His trailblazing contributions to corporate governance, notably becoming the first elected board member from public shareholders at Dhivehi Raajjegeyge Gulhun Plc, highlight his commitment to positive change.

Ibrahim Noordeen, appointed to the MACL Board in March 2019, brings a wealth of experience in business entrepreneurship, particularly in the construction, development, and operation of tourist resorts in the Maldives. A qualified engineer, Noordeen’s aviation background, coupled with his extensive involvement in tourism, makes him a valuable addition to the board.

With a distinguished career spanning over two decades in the inbound tourism sector, Mohamed Riyaz has assumed the role of Non-Executive Director since his appointment in December 2023. Recognised for his philanthropy and dedication, Riyaz’s leadership is evident through his roles as the first President and Founding member of both the Maldives Association of Yacht Agents (MAYA) and the Association of Travel Agents Maldives (ATA).

Chartered Banker and Senior Executive Director Sahar Waheed, appointed in December 2023, brings 17 years of high-impact leadership roles at leading financial institutions in the Maldives. Her strategic leadership, demonstrated across human resources, financial services, and regulatory compliance, aligns with her commitment to achieving excellence.

Appointed to the MACL Board in December 2021, Ibrahim Siyad Qasim, Managing Director of Villa Group, contributes his in-depth knowledge and skills in finance, accounting, and econometrics. Siyad’s vast experience and passion for service position him as a respected figure in the Maldives business landscape.

Finally, Ibrahim Mahudhee, a qualified lawyer with expertise in business, marketing, and media, has been a Non-Executive Director since December 2021. His multifaceted perspective and commitment to professional, reliable, and personalised legal services make him a valuable asset to the MACL Board.
