Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) is celebrating the 57th anniversary of Velana International Airport today, 12th April 2023.
Velana International Airport was first opened under the moniker Hulhule’ Airport on 12th April 1966 and was initially managed by an airport office created by the government, which was later replaced by Maldives Airports Authority. After undergoing various development phases, Male’ International Airport was then opened as the Maldives’ first international airport in 1981.
The rapid growth of the airport led to the establishment of a separate commercial entity, which was detached from the government administration on 1 January 1994. Eventually, Maldives Airports Authority was incorporated into MACL as a limited liability company on 1 August 2000.
As the largest airport operator in the Maldives, MACL has over 56 years of experience and is committed to designing integrated solutions to provide a world-class experience at Velana International Airport. MACL is currently investing in a billion-dollar project to expand the capacity of Velana International Airport from 1.5 million to 7.5 million, with a goal to create an airport that matches the luxury hospitality that the Maldives is known for. The new facilities will include a new terminal, seaplane terminal, fuel farm, cargo facility, fire and rescue services building, and other amenities designed to provide guests with a seamless travel experience.
