Maldives and Malaysia Move Towards Preferential Trade Agreement Talks

The Maldives and Malaysia have agreed in principle to begin negotiations on a Preferential Trade Agreement as the two countries seek to expand cooperation across trade, investment and several other sectors.

The agreement was reached during official talks between President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the President’s Office on Tuesday morning. The discussions formed part of Prime Minister Anwar’s State Visit to the Maldives.

The two leaders reviewed bilateral relations and considered opportunities to widen cooperation in Islamic affairs, defence, healthcare, tourism, trade and investment. Potential collaboration in natural resources was also discussed.

The talks additionally covered challenges faced by Maldivians living in Malaysia, although further details on the issues discussed or possible measures were not provided.

President Dr Muizzu expressed appreciation for Malaysia’s contribution to the Maldives’ national development, while Prime Minister Anwar acknowledged the relationship between the two countries and the Maldivian administration’s leadership.

Both leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to cooperation on international issues, including the Palestinian cause. They agreed on the importance of closer coordination at the United Nations and other multilateral forums.

Prime Minister Anwar was formally received by President Dr Muizzu at Republic Square earlier on Tuesday. The ceremonial welcome included a cultural performance by students of Dharumavantha School, a 21-gun salute by the Maldives National Defence Force and a Guard of Honour.

The national anthems of both countries were played during the ceremony, followed by the presentation of members of the Maldivian and Malaysian delegations.

The Maldives and Malaysia established diplomatic relations 58 years ago. The relationship has since developed through high-level exchanges, development cooperation and extensive people-to-people links.
