Maldives and Sri Lanka Sign 3 Agreements During Official Visit

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, His Excellency Abdulla Shahid and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, His Excellency M.U.M. Ali Sabry yesterday witnessed the signing of three agreements between the Maldives and Sri Lanka. The agreements were signed during the Fourth Session of the Maldives – Sri Lanka Joint Commission held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka.

The agreements that were signed include the “Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Republic of Maldives and the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka on the Establishment of the Maldives Cultural Centre in Sri Lanka”. The agreement was signed on behalf of the Maldivian Government by His Excellency Ali Faiz, High Commissioner of Maldives to Sri Lanka and His Excellency Somarathne Vidanapathirana, Secretary to the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs of Sri Lanka.

The “Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Republic of Maldives and the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka on the Field of Health Cooperation” was signed by Mr. Shamau Shareef, Deputy Minister of Ministry of Health on behalf of the Government of Maldives and His Excellency Dr. A.K. Sunil Bernard De Alwis, Additional Secretary (Medical Services) to the Ministry of Health of Sri Lanka.

His Excellency Mohamed Thoriq, Minister of State for Arts, Culture and Heritage, signed on behalf of the Maldivian Government, the “Memorandum of Understanding on Cultural Cooperation between the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and the Government of the Republic of Maldives”. The MoU was signed on behalf of the Sri Lankan Government by His Excellency Somarathne Vidanapathirana, Secretary to the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs of Sri Lanka.

The agreements aim to foster greater bilateral relations and cooperation between the Maldives and Sri Lanka in the field of cultural and health cooperation and people-to-people relations.
