Maldives, China Look to Strengthen Economic Ties

H.E. Ren Shengjun, President of the Export-Import Bank of China (China Exim Bank), met with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Tuesday, signalling a deepening of economic cooperation between the two nations.

During the meeting, President Muizzu highlighted China’s role in supporting key infrastructure projects in the Maldives, including the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge and various social housing initiatives. The Chinese-funded bridge, a critical transportation link, has been a key symbol of the growing relationship between the two countries.

President Muizzu emphasized his commitment to delivering affordable housing to Maldivians during his term, a crucial issue in the densely populated island nation. China’s assistance in housing projects aligns closely with this priority.

Mr Ren acknowledged China and Maldives’ longstanding ties and the Maldives’ role as an early participant in China’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative – a global infrastructure and trade development plan. He expressed China Exim Bank’s willingness to expand collaboration with the Maldives, suggesting future projects may be in the works.

The leaders affirmed their commitment to strengthening future engagements, indicating that additional investments and collaborative efforts between China and the Maldives are likely on the horizon.
