Climate finance, sustainable investment and tourism cooperation emerged as key areas for closer coordination during separate discussions between President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and senior officials from Tuvalu and Palau.
The discussions took place during courtesy calls held on the sidelines of the SIDS Global Business Network Forum 2026 and Island Investment Forum in the Maldives.
Tuvalu’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and Economic Development Panapasi Nelesone discussed the economic and environmental vulnerabilities confronting Small Island Developing States with the President.
Their discussions covered climate finance, sustainable investment and the need for international financing mechanisms that reflect the particular circumstances of island states.
President Muizzu welcomed closer engagement between the Maldives and Tuvalu, highlighting the importance of solidarity among SIDS when responding to shared economic, environmental and development challenges.
In a separate courtesy call, Palau’s Minister of Human Resources, Culture, Tourism and Development Ngiraibelas Tmetuchl discussed opportunities for greater cooperation with the Maldives.
The meeting covered climate change, sustainable tourism and investment opportunities that could support development across island economies.
President Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to working with Palau to advance the priorities of SIDS and reinforce their collective representation in international discussions.
The SIDS Global Business Network Forum 2026 and Island Investment Forum are being held in the Maldives from 23 to 25 August.
The forums bring together representatives from governments, businesses and development organisations to identify partnerships and investment opportunities supporting sustainable and resilient development across SIDS.
