The Maldives has reaffirmed its support for strengthening the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, as President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met outgoing SAARC Secretary-General Md. Golam Sarwar for a farewell call at the President’s Office.
The meeting focused on the association’s role in advancing cooperation among South Asian states, including efforts to deepen regional integration and pursue shared development priorities.
President Muizzu thanked Sarwar for his service during his tenure and acknowledged his leadership of the regional body. He also reiterated the Maldivian Government’s commitment to supporting SAARC and its work across regional and international forums.
Sarwar expressed appreciation for the cooperation extended by the Maldives, describing the country as an important member of SAARC since its establishment. He also thanked the President for efforts aimed at reinvigorating the organisation.
The two officials reflected on key SAARC initiatives and discussed ways member states could maintain closer cooperation in the period ahead. President Muizzu concluded the meeting by extending his best wishes to Sarwar for his future endeavours.
The Maldives is one of SAARC’s founding members. The association was established with the signing of its Charter in Dhaka on 8 December 1985.
