- Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef leads a high-level delegation to advance small states' priorities like climate action and access to finance.
- CHOGM takes place 1-4 November in St John's, under a theme focused on partnerships and investment for a prosperous Commonwealth.
The Maldives will co-chair the Commonwealth Ministerial Meeting on Small States, a separate gathering held alongside the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Antigua and Barbuda. Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef has travelled to attend CHOGM with a high-level Government delegation.
The Vice President is scheduled to participate in events and deliver remarks and interventions during the visit. The President’s Office has not specified which meetings he will attend.
The small states meeting gives Commonwealth ministers a forum to discuss shared concerns ahead of CHOGM. As co-chair, the Maldives is expected to help advance small states’ priorities, including climate action, economic vulnerability and access to finance. These issues are significant for the Maldives as a small island state exposed to climate risks and constrained by its scale and geographic dispersion.
CHOGM, the Commonwealth’s highest-level gathering, takes place every two years and brings together leaders from its 56 member countries. This year’s meeting is scheduled for 1 to 4 November in St John’s, under the theme “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth”. Discussions will focus on cooperation, investment, trade, resilience and sustainable development.
The Maldives rejoined the Commonwealth in 2020, after withdrawing in 2016. Its co-chair role at the small states meeting forms part of its participation in the organisation and its efforts to represent the interests of small island and developing states.
