Maldivian Expands Air Services to Strengthen Connectivity Across Southern Atolls

Maldivian has introduced enhanced air services to strengthen connectivity across Gaafu Alifu, Gaafu Dhaalu, Fuvahmulah and Addu, as part of broader government-led efforts to improve regional air transport links.

The expanded services are intended to improve movement within the southern atolls, while reinforcing Gan in Addu as a key air transport hub linking the wider southern region. The strengthened network is expected to improve access between islands in Gaafu Alifu, Gaafu Dhaalu and Fuvahmulah, supporting more reliable travel within the region.

For local communities, the enhanced air services are expected to provide more predictable travel options for work, education and essential personal journeys. Improved connectivity via Gan is also expected to support medical-related travel and onward connections, while reducing dependence on longer or weather-sensitive sea journeys.

The improved air network is also expected to support tourism within the southern region. Tourists arriving via Gan will be able to travel more easily between island destinations, supporting resorts, guesthouses and local tourism operators by enabling smoother inter-island transfers and more flexible travel options.

As part of the enhancement, Maldivian will operate Twin Otter aircraft across key southern routes, strengthening air links between Gan, Fuvahmulah, Kaadedhdhoo and Kooddoo. The services are designed to improve accessibility for both residents and visitors travelling within the southern atolls.

Bookings for the enhanced services opened on 22 January 2026, with travel scheduled to commence from 1 February 2026. According to the airline, the expansion reflects its efforts to respond to changing travel needs while maintaining reliable domestic connectivity across the Maldives.
